Aquarium Sand & Substrate Calculator

Estimate substrate volume and weight from tank dimensions and desired bed depth.

US liquid gallons (1 US gal = 3.785411784 L). Switching units converts your entries.

Turn sand bed dimensions into a weight estimate

Measure the inside length and width of the aquarium and choose the desired average bed depth. A level bed across the whole rectangular footprint is assumed. The tool converts its volume to mass using a material-density estimate.

Formula and units

Substrate volume (L) = length × width × depth (cm) ÷ 1,000. Weight (kg) = volume (L) × bulk density (kg/L).

Worked example

A 48 × 18 inch base with a 2 inch bed contains about 28.32 L of substrate. At the live-sand estimate of 1.5 kg/L, that is about 42.48 kg or 93.64 lb.

Assumptions and limits

The presets use 1.5 kg/L for live sand, 1.55 for aragonite and 1.4 for crushed coral. Actual bulk density depends on grain size, packing and moisture. Slopes, rockwork and package coverage can change how much you need to buy.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much sand do I need for my aquarium?

Multiply the inside footprint by the desired bed depth, then multiply that volume by bulk density. This calculator uses approximate densities for the selected material. Check bag coverage information before purchasing.

Why might the real weight differ from this estimate?

Grain size, packing, moisture and slopes change how much area a bag covers. Rocks also occupy part of the footprint. The result assumes a level bed across the full rectangular base.

Should I rinse aquarium sand?

Follow the package directions for the exact product. Live, dry and pre-rinsed substrates can have different preparation requirements. The calculator estimates quantity; it does not determine how the material should be prepared.
